How do you make the complexity of an entire airline's operation visible and explorable? KLM asked Monkeybizniz to research and design tools that turn interconnected operational challenges into something people can navigate and reason with together.
The Case
KLM set itself the goal of strengthening coordination across its operational chain through new technology. While individual departments were each performing well, there was an opportunity to make interdependencies between them more visible and to support better-informed decisions across the organisation.
Our Design
Through research and co-design sessions with key departments, Monkeybizniz mapped the workflows and dependencies that connect KLM's operational chain. The insights were translated into two interconnected decision-support tools, both designed around game design principles: scenarios, multi-perspective dashboards, and a simplified representation of a complex reality. Swapportunities lets planners explore demand shifts across KLM's European network and test aircraft swap scenarios, checking feasibility across all dependent departments simultaneously and across multiple time horizons. Asset Health tracks the status and availability of ground equipment and aircraft fleet, comparing planned versus actual usage and surfacing maintenance and investment needs before they become operational bottlenecks.
The Result
A slide deck and internal storyline translating the two tools and their underlying logic into a narrative that could travel through the organisation, from senior leadership to the individual departments involved.
